SKA-PW Propulsion Division
Student Space Association — CFD of a Christmas Tree
As a member of the Propulsion Division at SKA-PW (Student Space Association, Warsaw University of Technology), I performed CFD analysis of a Christmas tree geometry in ANSYS Fluent, post-processing pressure distributions and drag data. I also participated in field propulsion tests and gained hands-on knowledge of composite lamination processes and material selection for rocket structures.
CFD Analysis
The Christmas tree CFD study was a training exercise in setting up external aerodynamic simulations in ANSYS Fluent — meshing a complex organic geometry, running steady-state RANS simulations, and extracting pressure distributions and integrated drag forces.
Flow Visualization
Post-processing included velocity contours, pressure maps, and vortex structure visualization at different freestream conditions, revealing how the tree's geometry creates recirculation zones and wake structures downstream.
Propulsion Testing
Beyond CFD work, I participated in field propulsion tests organized by the division, gaining first-hand experience with rocket motor firing procedures, instrumentation setup, and safety protocols.
Composites Experience
Worked with composite lamination processes during the association's rocket structure builds, learning material selection, layup techniques, and curing procedures for carbon fiber and fiberglass components.
Project Media
